As president of Stuart M. Perry Inc. a limestone and asphalt paving company in Frederick County, Denny Perry knew he could convert his vision. He happened to have the available tools to re-shape such dense landscape into undulating fairways, as well as a water source in his neighboring rock quarry. In the past five years front loaders have moved a million yards of dirt to form both striking and fluid changes in elevation, while thousands of gallons of water are making their way from the quarry to feed the Penn A-4 Bent grass, ponds, and island green at Rock Harbor.
Throughout excavation, Denny Perry has sought to re-shape, but also to preserve. Much of the rock blasted from the property has been re-established nicely around the tees and a third of the orchard remains on the course, delivering a lovely bloom to golfers each spring.
With each nuance in his creation, Denny Perry has focused on creating a beautiful course that would be as enjoyable to a player with a high handicap as it would be challenging to a player with a low handicap. The first 18 holes at Rock Harbor are now open for play. A second 18 holes have been planned and will be available in the future. Thus, Rock Harbor will be a Championship 36 hole par 71 course, fulfilling Denny’s vision.
